Facebook is everywhere. It has grown so big that a life without it is unimaginable now. Latest Facebook rumors say that the social media titan is planning to make their way into the healthcare field, something Facebook hasn’t done so far, but Google and Apple have.
Facebook is supposedly working on creating online “support communities” and these communities will connect Facebook users who suffer from various illnesses. Facebook is also planning to create what they call “ preventative care” apps to help improve people’s lifestyle.
Sources say that Facebook officials have been in meetings with medical experts and are working on developing a unit for testing the new health apps. There are no further details about these “health” applications as the project is still under development and at an idea stage.
Facebook has been known to be interested in the healthcare field but lately they have been focused on releasing and improving more pressing features and products. One of their most successful health-related campaign was in 2012 the “organ-donor status initiative”. Facebook modified the profile pages in order for the users to specify if they are organ donors. The campaign proved to be a huge success and it gathered 13,054 people who have registered as organ donors online. And that was just in the US. Bottom line is that Facebook managed to increase the percentage of organ donors in 2013.
Facebook said that there are many people with chronic diseases that search for advice on social media networks. This means that Facebook healthcare is something that will come extremely useful. A major concern with this new project would be the privacy of the patients but Facebook is working on tools to protect that. Right now the project is not very clear but we’re expecting official statements in the near future.
What do you think of Facebook’s plans to get involved in the healthcare department? Do you see it as something people will benefit from or does it look like another business strategy? Facebook is highly influential and could bring a change in the health care system. Please let us know what you think in the comment section below.
