The first week of January brought Apple record-breaking sales from the App Store with customers worldwide spending about half a billion dollars on applications and in-application buys. The company proclaimed the first day of this year to be “the single biggest day ever in App Store sales history”.
This rise in 20015 sales is just the sequel to what happened in 2014. The most prolific year for the App Store was 2014, with sales exceeding the ones recorded the year before by 50 percent. The sales of applications generated over $10 billion in revenue for developers, with a cumulated sum of $25 billion from the sale of apps and games. Bearing in mind that 30 percent of those earnings go to Apple, the company is doing quite well.
As Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior VP of Internet Software and Services stated:
“The current year is headed toward a marvelous start after a record-breaking year for the App Store and our developer group.”
Besides record-shattering sales, another note-worthy activity in Apple’s agenda was the collaboration with (RED) during the Christmas season. A part of the earnings obtained through the sale of apps went to the Global Fund to battle AIDS. In this quarter, the company managed to raise $20 million with a total of $100 million since starting the cooperation with (RED).
The most successful apps were those in the gaming category. Very popular games this year were Monument Valley, the Australia developed Hipster Whale, Crossy Road and Threes!, a puzzle game proclaimed “App Store’s Game of the Year on iPhone”.
A new addition to the Apple family was Swift, a programming dialect developed for iOS 8 helps programmers make better, more interesting applications. Another important newcomer is the Healthkit, which lets health and fitness developers share data with the Health app. Developers also came up with Homekit, a platform that facilitates the process of creating software that finds, designs, interacts with and controls gadgets for home automation.
Metal is an iOS 8 graphic software, made to enhance the performance of the A7 and A8 chips. This new technology was heavily appreciated by game developers all over the world.
In 2014, Apple also extended the store’s Kids Category, with applications dedicated to children under 12, and applications such as China Unionpay, a payment software for Chinese users and of course, Apple Pay, a software that ensures a simpler and faster method of payment.
Apple Pay was very well received by clients and traders as more banks and credit unions add support for this application. Important retailers such as Bloomingdale’s and Disney Store have also added Apple Pay to their methods of payment.
