General Motors, the car company that manufactures Cadillacs, decided to replace the old-fashioned rearview mirror with a better, more improved safety feature – a high resolution video camera thus improving the driver’s visibility and removing all those blind spots that the traditional mirror “offered”.
This upgrade will be first released as a component of the new CT6 flagship sedan. It has been in development since 2011 and it is considered an innovation in car industry. The manufacturers stated that this new feature offers a field of vision four times greater than that of a normal rearview mirror, getting rid of such optical disturbances as the headrest, rear seat passengers, the car roof and the rear pillars.
Travis Hester, Cadillac’s CT6 executive chief engineer said that using this kind of rear vision would be like
“driving a convertible with the top down”
He added that the manufacturers created this technology with the thought of making freeway driving more comfortable as drivers cannot see all lanes, using the help of side blind zone alert systems when switching them.
The new feature consists of a unique camera lens that is positioned toward the rear. When combined with the system’s video and image processing software it creates high-resolution images that are viewed using a display that replaces the rearview mirror. This is a 1280 by 240-pixel TFT-LCD display with 171 pixels per inch. The camera improves the rear view lane width and augments light when it is insufficient. Hester considers that “from a customer point of view, it looks completely normal.”
The camera is kept clean through a special “water-shedding hydrophobic coating” that also contributes to maintaining visibility even when faced with difficult weather conditions such as rain or snow.
The team of researchers and engineers that contributed to creating this new technology was awarded with 10 patents, one being for managing to stream video into the mirror and the other nine for the video processing system.
The mirror’s video streaming feature can be turned off by switching the toggle placed underneath the mirror. Taking into account all the advantages, the company is thinking of attaching this feature to other Cadillacs.
There is one downside to this otherwise great upgrade – its price. This new technology is at the moment available to the car lovers who can pay the price of luxury and the newest technology. The Cadillac CT6 will make its debut in the spring of 2015 at the New York International Auto Show.
