As per the Washington Post, a 2D shape is received by Kilobots, after which they arrange themselves for mimicking whatever you show them. There are around 1,024 Kilobots and luckily are aren’t having the capability of organizing and plotting against creators.
A computer scientist at Harvard as well as the lead author of the study, Michael Rubenstein told that he has been telling people that these robots aren’t dangerous. The only way they are harmful is if you try eating one. They are not even capable of going over a piece of paper. They are stuck where they are.
Leaders of the study stated that these Kilobots are important when it comes to collective artificial intelligence. Rubenstein said that Collective AI is displayed by these Kilobots, but they don’t have the capability of comprehensive thought.
This is a group of robots who work together for achieving a common goal. He further said that “If you call collective artificial intelligence the ability of a ‘collective’ to start to behave as a single entity, you could call this collective artificial intelligence.”
The cost involved in building each robot is $14. These kilobots are 2 inches tall and are 1.2 inches in diameter. They are seen scuttling around on 3 tiny point-like legs. A smooth, flat surface such as a dry erase board is needed by kilobots for optimization of their operation. They would be held up by anything coarser than it, such as paper.
Armin Hoell from Harvard Berlin also said that “The research on this phenomenon is now proceeding because we are convinced that such nanoclusters lend themselves as catalysts, whether in fuel cells, in photocatalytic water splitting, or for other important reactions in chemical engineering,”. However, this result could not be achieved only with electron microscopy, since only sections and details of the specimen can be displayed.
