We don’t see everyday a major smartphone company releasing a camera, but HTC has done it. The HTC RE camera is something the company calls “a remarkable little camera.” At first sight, you might be tempted to say that the HTC RE camera is a serious competition for the GoPro, which has become increasingly popular over the past years. HTC has a different opinion. They say that the HTC RE camera is far from being a “copy” of the GoPro. Their camera is independent of a PC and it can take pictures on its own.
Peter Chou, HTC CEO said that:
“We are very different, we are mobile, we don’t need a PC and we are cloud based… we are for everybody.”
The new HTC RE camera comes with two buttons: one is used for shooting pictures and the other one was designed to initiate the slow motion mode. One of the special features of the HTC RE camera is that it doesn’t have a power button. How do you turn it on then, one might ask? The camera automatically switches on when you pick it up and hold it.
The HTC RE camera has an ideal grip and it can also be attached to a multitude of place like on your bike, to take moving pictures. You get a button for taking 16MP photos with just one press and by holding the button you film full HD 1080p videos. It’s as simple as that.
The HTC RE camera was designed especially for the mobile generation. It doesn’t need to be attached to any computers and it can be controlled using a simple app. HTC has made the app available for all Android devices from version 4.3 on. The HTC RE camera is also compatible with iOS, meaning that HTC takes things very seriously and doesn’t exclude anyone.
The HTC RE camera doesn’t have an internal storage and all the photos and videos you record get saved in the cloud using the app. The camera allows for an extra SD card of 128GB. The price of the HTC RE camera is $199 in the US.
