Drug maker Johnson & Johnson on Wednesday announced that it is going to recall its controversial surgical device power morcellators on suspicion of cancer spread.
The insiders say the company has planned to ask the doctors to return all such surgical devices as they are believed to have potential to inadvertently spread cancer in women who are getting treatment for uterine growths called fibroids.
Earlier in April, Ethicon unit of J&J had suspended sales and distribution of these surgical devices.
Meanwhile, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the medical community are reviewing the efficacy of the devices in treating symptomatic fibroid disease. The FDA had also advised the doctors not to use them while they were pending for review.
The FDA had also warned that the spinning blade of the device may spread cancer. However, the fed agency has voiced for further review.
Johnson & Johnson is also planning “a worldwide market withdrawal” of all Ethicon morcellation devices. In this regard, the company is going to ask the customers to return their devices they have purchased.
In an e-mailed statement, the company said, “Due to this continued uncertainty, Ethicon believes that a market withdrawal of Ethicon morcellation devices is the appropriate course of action at this time until further medical guidelines are established and/or new technologies are developed to mitigate the risk.”
The power morcellators are used to cut down the growths of uterine. The device is also used to treat hysterectomies.
