Tech giant Sony Corp on Monday said that unidentified hackers attacked its PlayStation Network leading to its inaccessibility but the 53 million users’ personal information remained uncompromised in the security breach.
In a statement on Monday, Sony said that all the user data were secure and it is trying to restore access to the gaming network at the earliest.
“We are trying to get the network back up as fast as we can while finding the source of the problem but I can’t say how long that will take,” Satoshi Nakajima, spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment said in Tokyo.
Following the cyberattack on Sunday, a group of unidentified hackers posted their reactions on the micro-blogging site Twitter with the account name ‘@LizardSquad’.
In the tweet, the hackers said that the attack was meant to impose pressure on big tech companies like Sony Corp to expand their expenses on security issues.
“Sony, yet another large company, but they aren’t spending the waves of cash they obtain on their customers’ (PlayStation Network) service. End the greed,” one of the tweets said on Sunday.
The PlayStation attackers further said they had also targeted the servers of Blizzard Entertainment, the makers of popular video game World of Warcraft. Notably, the users of Blizzard Entertainment are facing trouble in scrolling through its website. The hackers have also threatened to attack Xbox Live network of tech giant Microsoft Corp, which has been experiencing problems with its server.
In an Xbox blog post, Microsoft wrote on Friday that some of its users had tough time accessing various sections of the network including their accounts on Sunday.
“We don’t comment on the root cause of a specific issue, but as you can see on Xbox.com/status, the core Xbox LIVE services are up and running,” David Dennis, Xbox spokesman, said.
Blizzard Entertainment was, however, cannot be reached for comment but its customer support account on Twitter said that its servers were stabilising.
