Samsung Electronics has recently asked the US International Trade Commission (ITC) to block the commercialization of Nvidia Corp (NVDA) computer-graphic chips on the US market. On November 21, the South Korean company has filled a complaint with ITC against Nvidia for infringing several of its patents on computer graphics chip-sets, and for making false allegations.
The legal battle of giants started this year, on September, when Nvidia filled a complaint with ITC against Samsung and Qualcomm Inc. over patented GPUSs (Graphics Processing Units). In that ITC complaint, Nvidia requested from the US agency to block the US imports of Galaxy tablets and smartphones that were using Qualcomm’s Snapdragon GPUs and Exynos processors from Samsung.
On November 4, Samsung sued Nvidia in a Virginia court for patent infringement. In this case, Samsung claims that Nvidia and one of its business partners have infringed eight patents when releasing the Nvidia Shield portable computers.
Both companies denied they stole technology from their direct competitors. On November 11, Nvidia said about Samsung’s legal move that it was a predictable tactic.
Hector Marinez, a spokesman for Nvidia, said in an e-mail message that since his company hadn’t seen the Samsung’s ITC complaint yet, it couldn’t comment on the matter. He added that Nvidia would certainly continue its earlier filled ITC complaint against Samsung.
In the November 21 ITC complaint Samsung named several other computer parts producers, such as Elitegroup Computer Systems and Biostar Microtech. GPUS are now becoming increasingly important for portable devices, since many consumers us them for playing computer games or watching YouTube videos.
