Do you ever wish to stick to a ceiling? If yes, gecko toe hairs will be needed for the same. As per the Researchers at Oregon State University, the “stickiness” for the toe hairs on bottom of their feet can be turned on by these little green lizards, due to which they can adhere to all surfaces and even ceilings.
Since the time of Greeks, people always have a question as to how the geckos have an ability of sticking to the walls. Even Archimedes gave a thought to this problem, says the assistant professor of Engineering at OSU and co-author, Alex Greaney, in a press release.
These hairs are known as seta and the adhesive properties of these are similar to those that are used by insects and spiders, even though they evolved independently. This adhesion system is being studied by researchers since a decade now, and attempts are being made by them for creating synthetic dry-adhesives that would replicate the abilities of gecko.
Climbing robots who can search through rubble for earthquake survivors use these adhesives. Greaney in a statement said that “While we don’t envision ‘Mission Impossible’ sticky gloves, which are inspired by or based on the concept of gecko adhesion, we envision that robots will use gecko adhesion in extreme environments in the future”.
He said that the feet of the geckos are by default non-sticky and as per research it was shown that not much energy is expended when they unstuck from a surface, thus enabling them to avoid predators. This research was published on Tuesday in the Journal of Applied Physics.
