The astronomers have claimed that they have finally identified a mysterious object observed at the center of our Milky Way galaxy.
According to the researchers, the bizarre entity shows the merger of two stars which is completely shrouded by dust and gases.
The findings have been made by the researchers at the University of California.
The astronomers have named the mysterious celestial body as G2. They were earlier considering it a hydrogen gas cloud that is gradually heading towards the massive black hole of the Milky Way galaxy.
Astronomers say if the bizarre entity had been a hydrogen cloud then it could have potentially torn into pieces by the black hole leading to dramatic changes in the state of the black hole.
Lead study author Andrea Ghez said as G2 continued to survive on its orbit, which was not possible in case of even a simple gas cloud, and remained unaffected by the black hole because there were no fireworks.
Ghez said that with the merger of two stars near the black hole, the one star hence formed start expanding to more than one million years before settling back down.
According to Ghez, G2 is currently undergoing a “spaghetti-fication”.
Spaghetti-fication is a common occurrence near black holes in which giant objects get elongated.
Ghez also said that the gas at the surface of the G2 is being heated by the neighboring stars, leading to the creation of an enormous gas cloud and dust that has fully shrouded most of the giant single star.
The study was published in the journal Astrophysical Journal Letters.
