Toddler killed himself in Tampa Bay. A two year old boy shot himself after finding his father’s gun in the car.
A little boy of two years old is dead after playing with his father.380 caliber handgun. The toddler had found the gun in the car of their parents.
Wednesday afternoon, 2 years old, Kaleb Ahles was waiting in the car in East Lake, while his parents Christina Nigro and Kevin Ahles, both of 23 years old, were loading boxes in the car. The family was preparing to move, stated the Sheriff’ deputy of Pinellas County. While playing in the car, somehow the little boy managed to open the glove compartment, the place where his father had the gun stored.
According to the reports of Tampa Bay times, the little boy had lifted the gun and handled it in such a way that it was facing his chest, and at one point he pulled the trigger.
The parents, told police officers they had heard a loud noise and immediately ran to the car. The mother of Kaleb tried to perform CPR on him but it was already to late. The toddler was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead.
Sheriff Bob Gualtieri explained that the gun was a light weight one, which can be carried on a hip or a pocket. He added that this was a tragic situation in which everything happened in the wrong way. None of the parents will be charged with criminal acts, because there is no law that can punish them harder than their conscience ever will, stated sheriff Gualtieri.
The grandfather of the little boy, also named Kevin Ahles, who is a former police detective from Tampa, remained Wednesday evening, close to the police tape outside the house, and uttered a few words.
“A great little kid was killed today.” (…)”That’s all there is to say”, said the heartbroken grandfather.
Ahles, said his son had a gun permit and got the .380 caliber weapon for protection. He is working as a manager at a restaurant and is usually working very late and carriers large amounts of money with him. He went on, saying that in general his son kept his gun with him, but since he had to help his girlfriend move, he decided to leave it in the car.
There was no way he was blaming his son for what happened, and stated that guns and kids are a bad combination.
Kevin Ahles and Christina Nigro were moving out in search of a fresh start. They have been together since high school and have also a four year old boy.
