Just days after the death of the Vice President’s Son, Beau Biden, GOP presidential candidate Ted Cruz made a grave mistake by mocking the grieving father. The Republican Senator retracted his comments moments later, apologizing for his insensitive joke in such a time of grief.
Sen. Cruz’s snide remarks were made during a GOP event hosted in Howell Michigan. After having sat down alongside 650 fellow Republicans at the Livingston County Republican Party, Ted Cruz cracked the joke during his 30 minute speech.
Mr. Cruz was also interviewed by a reporter for the Detroit News, Mr. Chad Livengood. The reporter immediately tweeted that the senator had made a joke about the US Vice president: “Vice President Joe Biden. You know the nice thing? You don’t even need a punch line.”
The ill-timed comments continued as Mr. Cruz was being cheered on and applauded. As he sees it, one need only walk into a room and utter the words “Vice President Joe Biden” and the whole room should crack up laughing.
Sen. Cruz then apologized for his ill-received comments via Twitter, noting that the loss of a son is a tragic moment and that his prayers went out for the Vice President’s family.
“It was a mistake to use an old joke about Joe Biden during his time of grief, and I sincerely apologize.”
Senator Cruz has often repeated this particular joke during his speeches all across the country. But when asked by Detroit News reporters why he had chosen to repeat the Biden joke that night, Mr. Cruz walked away and declined to answer.
The Vice President’s son, 46, died on Saturday after a long and tiresome battle with brain cancer. Beau Biden was an Iraq war veteran and had been a two-term AG of Delaware. His diagnosis came in late August 2013, when the VP’s son underwent successful treatment (involving surgery and chemotherapy).
Despite treatment, the cancer recurred this spring. Earlier in May, Mr. Biden was hospitalized and on Saturday evening, surrounded by family, he lost the battle against his cancer.
His funeral is scheduled for Saturday, when President Obama is expected to deliver a eulogy.
