It certainly feels like a green future is a lot closer, when electric cars and buses, solar panels and wind turbines are getting more and more used around us, but now, it’s getting even better. Tesla is releasing the battery of the future, that will be capable of powering an entire house.
That’s right! An entire house will be able to survive on the new Powerwall battery, provided that the house has solar panels. This new battery makes the survival on solar power alone almost 100% possible.
When a house owner has solar panels that produce excess energy, on days when it’s sunny outside and the need for energy in the house is lower than what the panel produce, this used to go into a grid. And the owner would get a credit, so that he could use energy from the grid on days when the panels were not producing enough power.
It is here that the new battery comes in! The Powerwall battery can replace the grid and store the energy for the home owner, so that he doesn’t need the grid as much. Unfortunately, there is still a need for the grid, but it is Tesla’s future prospect to eliminate that completely.
The cost of the Powerwall battery ranges from $3,000 to $4,500 and it has a lifespan of approximately 10 years. It is the size of flat screen TV and it has two configuration options: 7 kilowatt-hours and 10 kilowatt-hours. Tesla explained that a 7kWh battery is enough to power a regular sized house. After these 10 years, Tesla even commits to collecting the batteries and recycling them into future products.
The man behind this revolutionary battery is Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, the same man who made electric cars famous in the last few years. On his way to becoming the face of green energy, Musk is set on making some serious changes.
While the skeptics don’t see a bright future for Tesla’s Powewall, due to its costly nature that the average home owner might not afford, it is to be noted that this is only the first version of battery. And support is bound to come from people who want to live a greener life.
“Tesla’s solution is reasonable based on current hardware costs: I couldn’t build this system myself for less money. $350/kWhr for 10 years/500 cycles is among the best I’ve seen proposed, and at the scale Tesla is talking about, if realized, a wedge into a new market.” said Dan Steingart, professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Princeton.
It is everybody’s hope that such batteries become a success and that future more evolved versions of the product will solve all the setbacks that this pioneer version might have.
Tesla Motors is going to work with companies like Wall Mart, Target, Amazon and Green Mountain Power, in order to make the battery widely available to the public. Tesla is releasing the battery of the future and is going to turn a green powered world into the reality of the years to come.
