The Golden Gate Bridge is Closed for 52 Hours

The Golden Gate BridgeA much needed safety measure is being placed on the The Golden Gate Bridge. The bridge will be closed from Friday night until Monday morning so that construction workers can place a moveable median barrier. This barrier is set to prevent any future head-on collisions.
So little adjustments have been made to the Golden Bridge’s security that such a modification was required. The only precaution measure taken for cars traveling in opposite directions is the introduction of a few plastic tubes. These small tubes are placed at a meter’s reach to warn and prevent head-on collisions.
Thus, there have been more than one hundred accidents in the last forty years. These crashes resulted in hundreds of victims and sixteen deaths. Golden Gate Bridge spokeswoman explained that a lot of time was required to find a safety solution for head-on collisions. Priya David Clemens argued that up until, they did not benefit from the technology which is available today. Of course, money was also an issue.
However, all that is history. The present project was worth 30 million dollars. This huge amount of money resulted in 3,500 steel-clad attached concrete blocks that will be placed along the bridge’s length. The concrete barrier is 32-inch-tall and 1-foot-wide. Regarding rush hours, in order to avoid overcrowding or blockages, the barrier will be moved.
Other news that will interest mostly drivers, the speed limit will drop on a portion of the bridge. On the descent from Marin County, the limit will be 45 mph. Officials also advise motorists to drive slowly because the lanes will lose 6 inches.
Although most traffic will be closed on the bridge, for pedestrians or bicyclist it will be available. The bridge also allows transit buses and emergency vehicles to cross the The Golden Gate Bridge.
An interesting fact about this particular closure of the bridge is that it is the longest one in the States’ history. The bridge had been closed once more but only for a few hours. Now, the table has turned an the bridge will not open until Monday at 4 o’clock in the morning.
In this respect, many people have to change their plans for this weekend. A dinner in the city or a shopping spree will not be an option these days.
