The CEO of one of the most powerful companies in the world, Tim Cook has donated an impressive sum of money to help a gay rights foundation in his native Alabama state and two other Southern states.
The Human Rights Campaign is based in Washington and announced Cook’s contribution on Thursday. The exact amount of money Tim Cook donated was not disclosed but the gay rights organization said it is “substantial”.
Jason Rahlan is the spokesman for the Human Rights Campaign and said that he is hoping Tim Cook’s donation will inspire others to support the campaign called Project One America. The campaign is for the LGBT people in Alabama, Mississippi and Arkansas.
The 8.5 million dollar campaign is aiming to build acceptance for gays, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered people in the southern states. The project includes TV advertisements, direct mail and other means of outreach.
All three states lack non-discrimination protection for LGBT people and have bans on gay marriage.
Tim Cook made the headlines back in October when he came out as gay, making him the first openly gay CEO of a major company. His public announcement came soon after Cook encouraged the state of Alabama during a speech in Montgomery, to be more accepting of gay people and gay rights in general. Cook was given an Alabama Academy of Honor award.
The president of the Human Rights Campaign, Chad Griffin talked about Tim Cook’s donation saying that the Apple CEO was very impressed with the initiative of advancing the equality of LGBT Americans in US states where there is a lot of discrimination based on sexual orientation. Griffin added that Cook said that he was in and later donated a generous sum of money to help the campaign reach its goals.
He said that 2015 will be an important year and the project will continue to work “with greater urgency than before”. The president of Human Rights Campaign said thanked Tim Cook for his donation and said that the campaign is supported by more than 1.5 million members and supporters all over the United States, and together they will keep progressing.
