A rare Pokemon character made an apparition in Central Park, convincing hundreds of players to jump out of their cars and go look for the Vaporeon.
The media was filled with videos of people leaving their cars and their regular activities to get a chance to catch the Pokemon.
Pokemon Go is an augmented reality game that allows people to collect characters by walking around in the real world. The app uses GPS data to convince the players to explore their surroundings in their search for Pokemons.
Later, the Pokemons are used for gym battles, those gyms being also connected with real places that can be located through GPS.
The Vaporeon can be evolved from an Eevee, which means that every person can easily add one to their collection. However, the characters are very rare out in the wild – making the Thursday night’s apparition an incredibly unique event.
Even if a person chooses to evolve its own Vaporeon, the process takes a lot of time and can be very expensive in terms of XP points. Aside from a considerable effort, the chances are only 33% to get a Vaporeon. The more usual forms are Flareon and Jolteon, and a user will never be sure what they would get.
Each Pokemon out in the wild has a limited time in which they are available. The rare ones, such as a Vaporeon, stay open even for a lesser period. If a large city like New York is placed in the equation, with thousands of active players lurking around, to seize that one single Pokemon is an incredibly rare occasion.
The players have longed to solve the mystery of the Eeveelution, which means the capacity of evolving characters from Eevee into whatever form a user may choose. It seems that the secret was hidden in the original cartoon.
The method will be to name the Eevee with one of the characters’ names, depending on what the player would like to get. For instance, Mikey evolved into a standard Eevee, Sparky into a Jolteon and Pyro into a Flareon. The rare Vaporeon evolved from a Rainer.
It is, however, improbable that all the secrets of the game will be revealed so soon. The developers will certainly want to keep them to themselves, in order to offer as many surprises as possible to the players.
While the game is more and more popular, the images of people running off in large groups to a somehow random location out in the city may become something quite usual indeed.
