In the United States colorectal cancer is the number two cause of cancer death. There are several medical methods that can be done to help save lives, such as colonoscopy.
By undergoing a colonoscopy testing, the patient can be saved because the doctors can detect the precancerous polyps that are deadly.
Dr. Michael Orlich, one of the leaders of the new study, explained that the best thing one can do is to prevent any disease. Dr. Orlich calls it “primary prevention”.
The most important way to prevent colorectal cancer is by eating healthy food, says Orlich.
The new study involving more than 77,000 participants, revealed that those who consumed a healthy vegetarian diet had a lower risk of colon and rectal types of cancers, compared to the participants who were not vegetarians.
Dr. Orlich added that the participants who were vegetarians not only consumed meat-free foods, but they also avoided eating sweets, fast foods, snacks, caloric beverages and refined grains. According to the study, the participants ate more fresh vegetables, fruits, beans, nuts and whole grains.
Previous studies revealed that consuming red and processed meats increase the risk of developing colorectal cancer, while eating foods rich in fiber, lowers it.
However, Dr. Alfred Neugut, who is a professor of epidemiology at Columbia University Medical Center in New York City, explained that no one really knows for sure why a vegetarian diet might reduce the risk of colon cancer.
It’s not certain whether the vegetables have compounds that protect against cancer, or if meat is the one that causes the damage.
Neugut says that there are dietary studies that show an association between diets and cancer, but not a cause-and-effect link.
“That’s the problem in dietary studies of cancer. We don’t know exactly what the connection is.”
Neugut believes that a vegetarian diet could also be a sign of other healthy habits, such as not smoking and exercising. This would also help reduce the risk of colorectal cancer.
