Amid rumors that Windows 10 may scan hard drives and disable pirated video games, some torrent sites decided to prevent Windows 10 users from accessing their trackers. While some sites only announced such measure, others including iTS already put the measure in place.
Windows 10 made headlines since its launch. Tech experts and amateurs alike nagged over the privacy issues raised by Microsoft’s latest version of OS. For instance, Windows 10 is reportedly having a Wi-Fi password sharing feature that can share you passwords with Microsoft.
Moreover, some reports even reveal that it can scan your system and basically report back to its maker the users’ every action from opening a file to typing in their word processor. And the list doesn’t stop here.
Currently, die-hard pirates are concerned that the new operating system may erase, block access, or even bring the cops to their front doors due to the pirated content they are routinely siphoning from torrent sites such as The Pirate Bay.
Yet, some experts say that the rumors may be exaggerated. They explained that Windows 10 does say in its terms of service agreement that it has the right of hunting down pirated games and download special patches that can prevent users from playing them. Nevertheless, that feature may never become reality, and if it does it may only target Microsoft-owned content.
Yet some torrent trackers already banned Windows 10. The iTS recently disclosed that they are concerned over the large heaps of private data the OS beams back to Microsoft or to anti-piracy companies such as MarkMonitor which reports back to content owners if they spot any pirated version of their protected work.
Plus, iTS is also upset that the latest version of Windows sends information on what local disks contain to a Microsoft server.
“Obviously this goes way too far and is a serious threat to sites like ours which is why we had to take measures,”
iTS added in a recent statement.
Nevertheless, it is not the first time Microsoft works with anti-piracy companies, and there is little evidence that the company may disclose pirated content to third parties. But only a suspicion is enough for torrent sites to take precautionary measures.
BB and FSC are also planning to ban the OS from their torrent trackers. BB explained that they would take such measure because Microsoft shares info on users with anti-piracy groups. FSC cautioned their users that it is not long before they will not be able to use the site with Windows 10 installed on their systems.
