A heathy fit looking body could come with the cost paid by your partner or spouse. Couples working out together on a goal, whether is losing weight or quitting smoking, are more likely to attain it, than trying on their own. If one of the partners adopts a healthy habit it can encourage the other to do so as well.
Study has confirmed that a couples living together can influence one another habits. If one of the partners chooses to follow a healthy life style it might be followed more easily by his/hers partner too, said co author of the study, Jane Wardle, clinical psychology professor at the Health Behaviour Research Centre at University College London in England.
Over 3,700 couples have been analysed alone the period between 2002 and 201. The majority of the participants were around 50 years or older and all of the couples were living together or were married.
Since 2002 every couple was asked to fill in a questionnaire every two years and every four years they took a health exam. Researchers have noted all types of lifestyle changes, like smoking, physical activity and weight development. At the end of the study, 17% of the smokers partners had gave up smoking, 44% had beaten sedentary life and 15% of the ones who were overweight, both men and women lost more than 5% of their initial body weight.
According to the research, the smoker partners had increased chances of quitting if they lived with a partner who never smoked. Same rules applied to the sedentary partners living with an active partner.
Overweight women and men who lived with a fit partner, have shown the least amount of results. Around a quarter of the overweight men lost some weight after their wife had dropped some pounds and only 10% of the men lost some pounds when their wives didn’t. When it came to women, over 30% of them was able to loose weight together with their partners and just 15% of the women managed to loose weight when their partner had not.
The study wanted to prove that a life style change can be overcome easier with the support of the loved one. For example desiring to loose weight and starting to work with a trainer can become an easier task if receiving the encouraging of your spouse or partner.
