NASA’s Ames research facility witnessed some of the biggest names like Mark Zuckerberg, Cameron Diaz and Benedict Cumberbatch at the Breakthrough Prize ceremony where tech biz titans and celebs distributed $36 million. The Breakthrough Prize Board included tech tycoons like Jack Ma along with Mark Zuckerberg and Sergey Brin and prizes were awarded by them.
The lavish ceremony that was held on Sunday at NASA’s Hangar One saw tech tycoons and celebrities in attendance and the Yuri Milner led board which is full of wealth awarded millions to scientists and physicists for specific breakthroughs in the field of life sciences, mathematics, technology and fundamental physics.
The tech board handed over these awards to the deserving recipients; joining them were stars like Kate Beckinsale and Seth McFarlane. Mark Zuckerberg, Founder & CEO of social networking giant Facebook stated that there are many wonderful scientists, engineers and researchers coming together to help in providing solutions to the fundamental problems faced by the world today. He also added that this year’s prize winners of Breakthrough Prize made discoveries to cure various diseases and they all should be hailed heroes.
Yuri Milner, the Russian entrepreneur, started these awards. A self-confessed ‘failed physicist’, Milner made his fortune by investing in social networking firms like Facebook and Twitter.
Honours were given to six scientists for their extraordinary research work in Life Sciences. This included Alim Louis Benabid for his research to find the treatment of Parkinson’s disease and Victor and Gary fir their research work in genetic regulation by microRNA’s; whereas the $3M prize in the inaugural Mathematics category were awarded to Five mathematicians.
