According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, in the United States, approximately 3,500 babies die each year in their sleep. To this extent, the AAP released a set of new sleep safety regulations for infants.
The new sleep safety regulations for newborns stipulate that the most dangerous place a child could sleep on is a sofa or a couch. According to Dr. Rachel Moon at Virginia University, a sofa or a couch is a deathtrap because the baby could get trapped in the cushions and suffocate.
Another, very dangerous sleeping place is the bed. Parents often believe that the safest cradle is their pillow, but specialists do not agree. Usually, a baby is associated with sleep deprivation, so parents who managed to squeeze in some snoozes can roll over their infant and kill it instantly.
Furthermore, specialists are urging parents to avoid placing pillows or toys in the baby’s crib. The baby should sleep in an empty crib as to prevent the possibility of suffocating. The teddy bear may be cute, but it could also prove to be lethal if it obstructs the infant’s airways.
The new sleep safety regulations also specify that babies should not be placed on soft bedding because they can suffocate if their roll over in their sleep.
The AAP recommends new parents to keep their infant in the same room as them, but in a separate bassinet or crib. According to the latest studies, sharing a room with the baby until he or she is 1 years old reduces SIDS risks by fifty percent.
There is also a new addition to the guidelines. For the first time, specialists agreed that skin to skin contact just after the baby is born is beneficial for both parties.
Dr. Moon declared that such a practice increases lactation which promotes breastfeeding. When a child is breastfed, the risks of SIDS get even lower. When the babies are accustomed to the feeding practice, experts recommend that they should also be introduced to pacifiers. The objects have also been tied to a lower sleep-related death rate.
Among other recommendations, the new guidelines mention that parents should avoid consuming cigarettes, drugs, and alcoholic beverages around their newborns.
