Google is synonymous with search engine. They’ve tried to expand to other fields as well, creating smartphones, eyewear and smasrtwatches, but one thing’s certain: Google is and will be for a long time the number one search engine used by millions of people all around the world. Google has just announced that their main rival as a search engine is not what many people expected. Amazon is Google’s search engine rival actually. Google’s main man, Eric Schmidt announced that his company’s biggest rival as a search engine is the e-commerce giant, also known as Amazon.
The announcement was made in Berlin where Schmidt stated that, “Many people think our main competition is Bing or Yahoo. But, really, our biggest search competitor is Amazon. People don’t think of Amazon as search, but if you are looking for something to buy, you are more often than not looking for it on Amazon.”
We all know that Amazon’s main mission is doing e-commerce, making Kindles and smart TVs. Apparently there are a lot of people who use Amazon as a search engine as well. Schmidt also said that Google is under constant threat from newcomers and innovators, contrary to what people believed.
The news that Amazon is Google’s search engine rival made people wonder and Schmidt answered the accusations that Google is gaining a lot of monopolistic power, saying that those who accuse Google of such things do not really understand the business sector Google is in.
Schmidt said that, “The reality is that Google works very differently from other companies that have been called gatekeepers, and regulated as such. We aren’t a ferry. We aren’t a railroad. We aren’t a telecommunications network or an electricity grid, with only one line going to your home, and no competitors allowed. No one is stuck using Google.”
What do you think of the fact that Amazon is Google’s search engine rival? How often do you use Amazon as a search engine? Do you think Google will lose ground in the next years and won’t be the number one search engine in the world? Please leave your comments in the section below.
