Overweight alert for the American cats and dogs. It seems that our pets are gaining weight along with the rest of the American human population and reports turned out to be very disturbing.
Having a pet is not an easy task as they have needs and demands almost like humans, which need alot of attention and care.
Health reports have shown that in America, humans are not the only ones suffering from obesity, but their pets as well. New study suggested that even our beloved pets have been struggling with being overweight, and the cause of this would be their owners. Over feeding the animals and not giving them the chance to exercise and burn all that energy may lead to an obese pet.
In 2013, statistics from the Association for Pet Obesity and Prevention, showed that 52% of the dogs in America, meaning a number of 43.8 million have been estimated to be overweight or obese. Adding to that, the reports concerning obese or overweight American cats, which showed that 57.6% of them were in this situation.
The Association for Pet Obesity and Prevention, stated that one in every 5 dog and cat pets were obese. Even though a cute chunky fluffy animal is always adorable, there could hide a lot of health problems behind their chubby cuteness.
Obese animals are at high risks of being the targets of severe diseases like osteoarthritis, type 2 diabetes, which is resistant to insulin, heart malfunctions, hypertension, respiratory problems, kidney issues, and even worst, cancer.
According to researchers, pets tend to gain more weight during the colder periods of the year. As soon as the temperatures go down, it becomes a struggle for pet owners to take their animals out for a walk, a run or let them to play outside more. During the cold season, the tendency of owners is to feed their pets more than usual.
Health representatives admit, that reducing the food portions of the animals with up to 25% and curbing the number of treats and snacks would be extremely effective and would show a serious change of the animal’s physical condition.
Pet owners, should get specialized advice from their veterinarian, regarding what type of food that suits their pets best. Healthy and regulate dietary choices could transform the life of your pet at 180 degrees.
