A new poll revealed that Americans are stressing themselves out over their bills, health, and security more than they did last year. The American Psychiatric Association (APA) found that most Americans are now affected by anxiety.
The survey which involved 1,004 people revealed higher anxiety levels among American adults and the possible causes.
The poll showed that 39% of respondents have more anxious thoughts than they did a year ago. An extra 39% said that they were feeling as anxious as they did a year prior. Only 19% of respondent said their anxiety levels dropped from last year, with 3% being unsure about the topic.
National Anxiety Levels Going Up
In 2017, the APA reported a score of 46/100 for national anxiety levels. Meanwhile, the score climbed to 51/100, which is a significant rise over just one year.
Pollsters found that Americans are worrying the most about their safety. Around 36% said they fear they will be unable to keep themselves or their loved ones safe.
The second cause of stress was their finances, with 35% participants saying that paying their bills or finding the money for expenses makes them extremely anxious. Financial troubles have been linked to rising consumer debt and low wage increases nationwide by a 2017 poll.
What’s more, APA found that one in five Americans are feeling anxious about the political context, with 36% saying that politics makes them “somewhat anxious”. Respondents reported similar anxiety levels when asked about their relationships with co-workers, family, and friends.
Americans are also worrying about gun violence, the opioid crisis, and mental health issues. Also, women were more likely to stress themselves out over the said issues. The poll revealed that 57% of females and 38% of males reported higher anxiety levels when compared to last year’s levels.
