A Missouri judge ruled the state’s ban on gay marriage saying that it’s unthinkable and especially unconstitutional. The judge ordered the county of St. Louis to issue marriage licenses for any couple who wants to get married, regardless of their sexuality.
The St. Louis Circuit Judge Rex Burlison said that:
“The Court finds and declares that any same-sex couples that satisfies all the requirements for marriage under Missouri law, other than being of different sexes, is legally entitled to a marriage license”.
Missouri Attorney General, Chris Koster said that he has appealed the judges verdict in the Missouri Supreme Court.
The new ruling regarding gay marriage comes after four same-sex couples were married in the St. Louis City Hall, four months ago.
The act of defiance against gay marriage ban in the state of Missouri has been supported by the mayor of Missouri Francis Slay, which made Koster file an injunction. According to Koster and his injunction, they want to prevent other same-sex couples from receiving marriage licenses in the Missouri.
The latest ruling made by the Missouri judge is another win in the battle for accepting gay marriage. Earlier this month, a judge from Kansas City ruled that gay marriages in the state of Missouri should be honored by the state. Judge J. Dale Youngs’s decision of accepting gay marriages was the first of its kind in the state of Missouri. According to some reports, the ruling affected approximately 5,000 couples in Missouri.
Koster said that although he is a supporter of gay marriage he also has a responsibility of defending the state’s law and cannot accept anyone breaking it.
According to a 2010 Census, there are 10,557 same-sex couples living together in Missouri, and 17% of the couples have children together.
David Gray and Tod Martin are one of the four couples who got married in June in Missouri. When asked what they thought about the new ruling on gay marriage they said:
“We are completely amazed, in awe and happy for those who have a chance to get married. We are hoping that this will spread across the rest of the state.”
