A group of UFO enthusiasts announced on Twitter that one of the unedited images sent back to Earth by NASA’s robotic rover Curiosity may hold evidence that there is life on Mars. UFO fans said that the image clearly shows a bizarre woman-like shape standing on one of the Martian hills.
The news was popularized by the site UFO Sightings Daily, which first posted it on Twitter. The site even posted a description under the photo with what space fans believe that the silhouette may be.
According to Scott C. Waring, one of the site’s editors, the woman-like shape seemingly has breasts “indicated by the shadow on its chest,” long hair, and a light skin complexion. Mr. Waring believes that the shape may be either a statue, crafted by a long-forgotten ancient civilization, or a real woman, which is not taller than 8-10 cm, or 3.10- 3.9 inches.
Nevertheless, the description’s author rules out the statue hypothesis because, he believes, the harsh environment would have eroded it over the course of millennia. Mr. Waring thinks that the silhouette is a real woman that watches the robotic rover from afar.
The announcement about the Martian woman was posted on Twitter under the the hashtags #ufo #mars #UFO #ufosightings.
But some experts were unimpressed. They said that there were many possibilities including a Martian spectral figure, a mini-statue planted on the Martian soil by a once great society, and just a “piece of dirt.” Many other so-called Martian sightings proved to be only hoaxes.
For instance, recently the same site reported an alien crab captured by Curiosity in a July image. In another photo, other people saw a rat moving around Martian rocks which triggered a conspiracy that the Martian robotic mission is actually filmed on Earth and that the rodent escaped NASA image editors’ attention. Other UFO fans detected an alien pyramid-shaped base on Mars. And of course NASA keeps it all secret. It just forgets not to make public the revealing photos.
Psychologists have even an explanation for the phenomenon. It seems that our brain plays a trick on us called pareidolia. It is in human nature to detect familiar shapes in distinct patterns. Same phenomenon helps us see animals in the clouds or a face on the full moon.
But when pareidolia kicks in while watching a picture from Mars, everybody losses their mind. So, while some people believe that the government bakes a conspiracy, others view the bizarre shapes as just some weird-looking rocky outcroppings.
