In a bid to beef up the security environment of its assets, Blackberry has announced that it is going to acquire a privately held German anti-eavesdropping firm Secusmart.
The Waterloo, Ontario-based smartphone makeron Tuesday said that it is planning to add extra muscle to its mobile security foundation. The announcement was made at an event held in New York.
“We are always improving our security solutions to keep up with the growing complexity of enterprise mobility, with devices being used for more critical tasks and to store more critical information, and security attacks becoming more sophisticated,” said Blackberry’s new Chief Executive John Chen in a news release.
Secusmart, which specializes in data and voice encryption, has also developed secure technology for protecting the smartphones of German government officials, including Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Blackberry device. Secusmart is a recommended firm for providing encryption and anti-eavesdropping services for governments, other companies and telecommunications service providers.
Secusmart has currently provided its services to secure the devices of government officials of both Germany and Canada.
With the move, Blackberry eyes burnishing its credentials with clients like government agencies, who requirehighly secure-environment to keep their data protected.
The company has, however, not revealed the terms of its deal with Secusmart.
“Everybody wants to talk about eavesdropping, but it really isn’t just that. Both governments and enterprises are now more and more focused on security in the mobile world,” said Chen in an interview.
“The deal with Secusmart will give BlackBerry more armor for making the device more secure,” he further added.
BlackBerry had acquired QNX Software Systems, an Ottawa-based company, in 2010. QNX Software Systems develops technology for the automotive industry that connects directly with mobile phone device of a driver.
QNX has become an integral part of BlackBerry. It has created BlackBerry’s latest smartphone operating system.
