First there was Raspberry Pi, the $35 micro Pc. This computer was so against modern frills devices, that it didn`t even have a case. Its purpose was to promote teaching basic computer science to school children at a lower cost.
When it was launched, the Raspberry Pi was the size of a credit card.
Now that the concept of a minimalistic computer is out there, a start-up company named Next Thing Co. announced last week that they were starting a Kickstarter campaign for an even smaller, more compact pc named Chip. This micro-pc will cost only $9 and will be available for purchase in 2016.
According to Next Thing, Chip will measure 2.3 inches by 1.5 inches, about the size of an USB stick. Now that is tiny!
Thanks to the money raised on Kickstarter, Next Thing will be able to buy all the components needed for Chip in bulk and thus receiving massive discounts from suppliers. This strategy is what will make their micro-pc ridiculously cheap.
People all over the world got very excited at the possibility to buy a pc they could carry in their pocket at such a low price and so over 13,000 people backed up Chip and decided to contribute over $700,000 to see it come to life.
In less than a week, the Chip campaign has managed to raise funds well above its initial goal of $50,000 and now the first shipments are expected to arrive as early as December 2015.
Chip will arrive to you , with a 1GHz Allwinner R8 Cortex A8 processor with Mali-400 graphics, 512MB RAM and with 4GB of storage space. Unlike his older version, Raspbery Pi, Chip will have functions such as bluetooth and wifi and will support VGA as well as HDMI.
However, the newer version of a micro-pc, Chip, does not come with better graphics than the Raspberry Pi, the original micro-pc. Founders of Next Thing said they might be willing to add better graphic cards, but added that this will increase the price of the device.
Also, if you live overseas and are planning on purchasing Chip, you should be aware of shipping costs which can nearly triple the cost of the computer. Shipping fees can fare between $24-$35, depending on your location.
Chip`s operating system will pre-installed on the device and will resemble Linux and will allow you to do just about anything you do on a full-sized computer once you set it up to screening device and a keyboard.
