The announcement of this ambitious program was made on Thursday and this escalates the technological arms race of Google with Amazon.com Inc. which is also making experiments with self-flying vehicles for carrying the merchandise brought by the customers of online store.
Own challenges are being mounted by Amazon to Google in mobile computing, digital advertising and online video in a battle which also involves Apple Inc. This foray into drones is termed by Google Inc. as “Project Wing”.
Although Google expects that several more years would be taken before the fleet of drones is completely operational, water, dog treats, candy bars and a first aid kit was delivered to 2 farmers before they travelled a distance of roughly 1 km, or just over half a mile, 2 weeks ago.
Even though aerial technology has been perfected, government approval is needed by Amazon and Google for flying commercial drones in several countries. Currently, the model aircraft makers and hobbyists are allowed to fly drones, but there is a ban on commercial use.
Project Wing is the latest venture of the “X” lab of Google which works on self driving of cars and other far flung innovations that push the technological envelope. The other handwork of the lab includes Google Glass, the internet connected eyewear, Project Look, the Internet beaming balloons and a high tech contact lens through which glucose levels in diabetics are monitored. Google says that it is making loads of efforts for improving the society through the lab research of X, however, a lot of criticism has been faced by the Glass device.
