The prompt actions of a sheriff’s deputy in Marion County, Fla, saved the life of a completely “unresponsive baby” boy. The man first learned that there was something wrong with the child from the baby’s mother.
MCSO K9 Deputy Jeremie Nix took was heading home after his shift when a female driver “flagged [him] down.” The woman told him that her 3-month-old baby was unresponsive and urged him to help her.
Nix pulled the patrol vehicle to the side of the road and took a look at the baby. He performed CPR on the child, but with no success. Since there was no visible improvement, he decided to get the baby to a nearby hospital in his patrol car.
The child’s mother recalls that the deputy “just took off” in his car and she and her friend had to follow him to the Ocala Regional Medical Center. The dashcams show the two women approaching the deputy, with one of them holding the unresponsive baby in her arms.
Deputy Rushes Baby to the Hospital
The mother is seen handing the child to the officer. Moments later Nix is heading back to the patrol car and is heard asking for help via the radio. He is heard saying that he is “not waiting for the medics.” He informed the dispatcher that he was taking the baby to the ER immediately.
The man’s gut instinct helped save the baby’s life, ER doctors later said.
“I heard this one breath that was very faint,” the deputy said after the incident. He added that, in those moments, his only thought was that he didn’t have enough time to wait for an ambulance or a doctor.
He just gripped the baby boy as tight as he could and rushed him to the nearest emergency room. In the ER, the baby received proper treatment and was saved.
The Sherriff’s office announced that the baby was “very well”. Doctors said that he would fully recover. Also, ER medics insisted that the child is still alive today thanks to Deputy Nix’s prompt response.
