The global warming and unabated pollution is contributing to climatic imbalances on the Earth. Despite severe awareness programs, global pacts and international call for combating the menace, the pollution levels continue to mount day-by-day.
Almost every natural disaster including drought and floods are directly or indirectly linked to the rising temperatures and pollution levels. A new entry to this list of natural phenomenon occurrence due to climate change is tornadoes.
According to a new study, the climatic imbalances are resulting into more tornadoes.
Lead researcher James Elsner said, “We may be less threatened by tornadoes on a day-to-day basis but when they do come, they come like there’s no tomorrow.”
The researchers who carried the study found a key role of climate changes in the strength and frequency of tornadoes in the US.
Notably, America records highest number tornadoes. In 2011, the US saw nearly 1,700 storms that have claimed lives of more than 550 people. 189 storms have occurred in the US so far this year. They have claimed 43 lives here in 2014.
In a bid to know about the severity in these storms, their frequency and number of their occurrence at a time, the researchers studied the climate data. Earlier studies were conducted to know about the number of days per year the tornadoes were forming.
“I think it’s important for forecasters and the public to know this. It’s a matter of making sure the public is aware that if there is a higher risk of a storm, there may actually be multiple storms in a day,” Elsner said.
Following the analysis of the climate data, the researchers concluded that there may be more sunny days but the stormy days are most likely to be hazardous. Hence, they stresses it’s important to take the weather patterns seriously, especially in regions like US which are prone to such catastrophic events.
The study is published in the journal Climate Dynamics.
