Apparently when you want to leave your home town and start anew, robbing the gas station isn’t the best idea. And the remorseful Eureka man returned to the scene of the crime and surrendered to authorities. According to Eureka Police Department officials, Cyle Warren Abbott Jr., 23, was taken into custody after allegedly robbed a gas station on the 1000 block of Broadway Sunday morning. He was taken to and booked at the Humboldt County Correctional Facility on 211 PC-Robbery and probation violation charges. His bail was set at $50,000.
Abbott Jr. had a change of mind. He decided his reasons for the robbery were not right, and he did something most crooks would consider unthinkable. Abbot Jr. decided to go back to the store he robbed and give the money back.
Approximately three hours later, he returned to the convenience store. Police dispatch received a call from the gas station assistant manager stating the suspect had returned to the scene. Abbott Jr. was waiting in the bathroom for officers to arrive so he could surrender himself. He had already returned most of the stolen cash to an employee.
The suspect apologized for the crime and told police that he was trying to turn his life around. He told police he was hoping to use the money he stole to get out of town and start new somewhere else, police said.
Abbott Jr. reported that the firearm he used was a loaded BB gun and that he had tossed it in a grassy area on the west side of California Street near West Clark Street while fleeing the gas station. Police said he took officers to the spot where he tossed the gun, but it could not be located, police said.
Anyone who has information concerning this incident, including the whereabouts of the pistol, is asked to call the Eureka Police Department at 441-4060 during normal business hours or 441-4044 after hours.
Cyle Warren Abbott was born in Humboldt County California on November 22, 1990. He was previously arrested in 2011 for possession of Heroin and Methamphetamine, as well as another warrant for drug related charges. He has also been arrested previously for a DUI. Abbott’s Father, Cyle Warren Abbott Sr. has also been arrested multiple times on various drug charges.
