The next smartwatch of Samsung has been announced, well ahead of the IFA conference in Berlin starting on the 5th of September. The Samsung Gear S has a built in Wi-Fi, a super AMOLED Display as well as a cellular 3G radio for data connectivity, without needing to pair the smartphone providing internet access.
Various features are brought about by Gear S. The wristband and the styling matches the Gear 2 Neo and Gear 2 look and the curved display is similar to that of Gear Fit. Even the operating system echoes the Gear 2. Gear S, just like Gear 2 runs on Tizen. Samsung still works with Google and Android wear.
Gear S is an iteration on the smartwatch styling of Samsung and has echoes right back to the first smartwatch of Samsung. Samsung has put on sale the most watch like smartwatch, with traditional hour and minute hands on display.
Of course, it has to be kept in mind that these are press images and would have been chosen for giving the best context to the watch. The strap has similarity to that of Gear 2. On the other hand, the curved Super AMOLED screen creates a watch-like fee. The interface works with the bulk of a 2 inch screen. Everyone is also eager to see how the Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity will work apart from the famous Bluetooth connectivity that is used in the previous smartwatches of Samsung.
The press release of the company talks about 3G connectivity but doesn’t mention how this is achieved. Presumably, another SIM card may be needed for giving the handset data access through cellular network. It is expected that Gear S would go on sale globally in October 2014 and no indication on pricing has been offered by Samsung.
