‘The end of the world’ is here! Yes, this is what the locals leaving in a remote area of Siberia are calling a giant crater that has been found in a mysterious condition.
The massive crater has baffled the world scientists as they are clueless about its formation and related facts. However, the scientists believe that the crater is formed two years ago.
In a bid to solve the mystery, a group of researchers arrived for an urgent expedition in the far-northern peninsula. A research team from Russia’s Emergencies Ministry and the Russian Academy of Sciences is also present among the group of scientists who are carrying the expedition to solve the mystery. The investigators will take samples of soil, water and air from the region.
The apparently bottomless trench is located in Yamal , one of northernmost points of Russia at latitude closer to that of Greenland.
It is noteworthy, the whole area where the crater has been found is within key strategic oil and gas region – the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
According to a video released by Rossiyskaya Gazeta, the crater is about 80 meters wide. Researchers said the massive hole must have formed due some extreme thermal event.
Speaking over the possibility of a meteorite attack behind formation of the mysterious hole, spokesman of Yamal branch of the Emergencies Ministry said “We can definitely say that it’s not a meteorite. No details yet.”
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the governor’s office has said that such findings are not rare in Yamal.
“Occurrences like this are nothing new in Yamal. This happened last year, as well as two years ago… earth and ice behave unpredictably An underwater river might have moved the soil,” the spokesman said.
“So, there’s no emergency to speak of here, ” he added.
The world is waiting with bated breath for the outcome of the probe and why Siberia is witnessing such rare occurrences.
