Although birth control pills and condoms are the favorite choice of U.S teens, 2 other forms of contraception i.e. contraceptive implants and intrauterine devices are quite reliable, states the academy.
They must be the first-choice of teenage girls, who don’t wish to stay abstinent, says the Academy in guidelines that were published in the Journal Pediatrics that were published on the 29th of September.
However, experts are of the opinion that if pediatricians recommend implants and IUDs officially, their use among the teenage girls would increase. This move of the academy is fantastic, says an assistant professor of Obstetrics and gynaecology, Dr. David Eisenberg,.
Dr. Eisenberg said that “”I’m happy to see that every major medical or public health organization in the United States agree that IUDs and implants should be the ‘default’ first-line contraceptive methods for all women and girls who want them,”
As per Planned Parenthood, Intraurine devices are implanted in the uterus, wherein small amounts of hormone progestin or copper is released. The implant is of the size of a matchstick and is inserted under the skin of the arm, wherein controlled amounts of progestin are released.
With hormonal IUD, pregnancy can be prevented for five years and with the copper version, it can be prevented for 10 years. The contraceptive implant is effective up to 3 years.
For birth control pills and condoms to be effective, they have to be used perfectly. However, with implants and IUDs, it is not so.
