Instagram has released five new filters that users can apply to their still photographs. After a two years break, the photo sharing tool has announced the release of Slumber, Aden, Crema, Ludwig and Perpetua.
These filters allow users to give different enhancements or effects to photos. For example, the Slumber filter can add a retro look to the photos by using hazing and lowering the saturation of colors such as black and blue. According to John Barnett of Instagram, the name Slumber is related to the dreamy aspect that photos receive by using this filter.
The Aden filter adds a pastel-y aspect to photos and works great with portraits even when there is intense light in the picture.
The Ludwig filter will enhance the light in a photo while reducing the colors and it best use for architecture, geometric shapes and portraits. According to Chris Connolly of Instagram, the name of the filter was inspired by architect Ludwig Mies and the fact that it offers a minimalist aspect to the photographs.
Perpetua got its name because of the Cape Perpetua national forest found in Oregon according to Instagram’s Tim Leonardo. This filter is best applied to photos which present a landscape or nature. This filter gives the photographs “a bluish, green earthy look like of nature” according to Instagram.
The last filter, Crema, offers photos a creamy look by smoothening colors. Crema brings a cooling and yet warming effect to photographs according to Jon Pottebaum of Instagram.
Instagram has released these new filters after two years to stay in the race for the number one tool in matters of photography. It is said that applications such as VSCO Cam became competitors of Instagram’s old apps and quickly took the throne of photographs enhancements and effects.
Instagram’s response was announced in the summer and this month they released their own tools that were especially designed to draw the attention of VSCO Cam users. According to a statement from Instagram, the company acknowledged the fact that photography has evolved and people have shown more and more creativity in the photos they share and time spent to edit and create videos or pictures.
Even more, these filters will not be all Instagram has to offer. Sources say that the company will add three more features that will allow its users to edit and create videos or photos. The new features will include options that will allow users to automatically update comments, a tool for extra modifications and updates to the well known slow motion option for videos.
