Apple has released the iOS 8.1.1 update for users of the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. The new OS offering should improve the speeds of the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 especially, which should be great news for users of the two oldest devices compatible with iOS 8. These performance improvements should also be of assistance to the original iPad Mini and the fifth-generation iPod Touch, as well.
Apple’s software update, 8.1.1, went live Monday. According to a description, the update includes “bug fixes, increased stability and performance improvements for iPad 2 and iPhone 4s.”
Since Apple launched iOS 8 in September, complaints surfaced from owners of older devices that the new software was slowing the performance of their hardware. “Both models are the cut off point for iOS 8 upgrades and the pair suffered from major slowdowns in moving from iOS 7, particularly the iPhone 4S,” Forbes reports. “In calling both the iPhone 4S and iPad 2 out by name Apple will be hoping to address two of the remaining pain points for iOS 8.”
Other than performance improvements and bug fixes for the iPhone 4s and the iPad 2, iOS 8.1.1 doesn’t seem to offer anything substantial to other devices, making it a rather trivial update for users with newer iOS devices. The update is a crucial one for iPhone 4s and iPad 2 owners, though, so be sure to download and install the update when you get a chance. iOS 8.1 focused mostly on adding features like SMS forwarding and Apple Pay, but 8.1.1 returns the focus to fixing bugs only. Apple usually gives some specific examples of other bugs that are being fixed, but it hasn’t listed any for this update yet.
This is the third iOS 8 update issued by Apple since its debut. An initial update was removed and replaced because some users who downloaded it reported a loss of cellular signal. Last month, Apple launched iOS 8.1, which added support for mobile payments service Apple Pay.
iOS 8.1.1 supports:
– The iPod Touch (Fifth Generation)
– iPhone 4s, iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus
– iPad 2, iPad with Retina display, iPad Air and iPad Air 2
– iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, iPad mini 3
