While no human has ever set foot on the Red Planet, NASA’s rovers are helping us get familiar with this far away planet. Mars is the hottest matter of study so far as it is the closest planet with an Earth-like atmosphere. Astronomers believe these features make it suitable to inherit the title of Earth 2. NASA has just uncovered fascinating details about the next Mars 2020 rover.
The Mars 2020 Rover Will Look for Traces of Past Life on This Planet
So far, all Mars rovers that NASA has ever deployed focused on one essential element more than others. This point of interest has always been cameras. The very first rover with the name of Pathfinder sported five cameras. Following robots made it a habit to increase this number incrementally.
The upcoming mission from this Mars series is scheduled for 2020. The primary objective will be to deploy a top-notch rover that sports the latest technology. In its turn, the machine will investigate the surface and geological materials in search of signs of past life on Mars.
The System of 23 Cameras Consists of Three Groups, Each with Unique Missions
NASA equipped the rover with a complex system of no less than 23 cameras to make sure it sends a visually accurate image of the planet. The majority of these tools are upgraded versions of the former rover equipment. However, the rest of them were built from scratch following the latest advances in the tech world.
The system is based on three groups of cameras. These are Science Cameras, Descent Imaging Cameras, and Enhanced Engineering Cameras. Those for enhanced engineering are upgraded versions of Hazcams and Mavcams as well as new CacheCam. They will be used for better sample collecting and better hazard measurements.
The imaging capabilities of Mars 2020 rover are unlike anything NASA created before. The new Navcams can still see a golf ball clearly from 82 feet away. Thanks to them, NASA can form a collection of 3D images of Mars.
The Science Cameras will be used to collect data about minerals. As for the Descent Imaging Cameras, they were specially created to document the first parachute deploying on a foreign planet.
