Massachusetts health officials have approved four more dispensaries of medical marijuana to run into the state including Boston where the first dispensary will be built.
According to the reports, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health has given provisional approval to three firms including Mass Medicum Corp., Coastal Compassion Inc. and Patriot Care Corp. to open medical marijuana dispensaries in Taunton, Fairhaven, Boston and Greenfield.
Karen van Unen, chief executive of medical marijuana program of Massachusetts, said, “I am pleased with the steady progress we are making and expect the first dispensaries to open later this winter.”
While Mass Medicum Corp. and Coastal Compassion Inc. will open medical marijuana dispensaries in Taunton and Fairhaven respectively, and Patriot Care Corp. to open the same in Boston and Greenfield.
Until now, there are no medical marijuana dispensaries in Massachusetts even though the state enjoys the approval of 11 such dispensaries in the inspection phase.
Patriot Care Corp. has won the approval for opening and operating three out of the 11 dispensaries in the state.
The Health Department has earned severe flack from the critics for its decision to allow Patriot Care Corp. to operate three dispensaries in the state. According to the critics, the health officials have done an unfair decision by giving special treatment to the company.
In order to avoid further criticism, the health officials at Massachusetts said that they will also allow another company to open dispensaries in locations like Brookline and Northampton.
The state has yet not taken any decision on opening dispensaries in Berkshire, Dukes, Hampden and Nantucket.
Dennis Kunian, spokesman of Patriot Care Corp., said that the company has not fixed any timeline for the opening of the medical marijuana dispensary in Boston.
Kunian also said that the firm is currently holding talks with some city councilors in Boston and neighborhood groups about dispensary-related issues.
