McDonald’s critics in India lashed out at the U.S.-based fast-food chain for using what they claim to be different food quality standards when it comes to food they serve in restaurants across the country. Critics also accused McDonald’s of ignoring their concerns about food quality in the last four years.
One of the restaurant’s most vocal Indian critics Vikram Bakshi noted Thursday that the U.S. firm has set in place global standards for food quality and safety, but those standards are ignored or replaced by others when it comes to the Indian market.
“[This] is a clear double standard], Vikram Bakshi, which is the company’s largest India partner, stated in an interview.
However, the feud between McDonald’s and Vikram Bakshi has been ongoing for years. The criticism comes just days after the company’s logistics partner, Radhakrishna Foodland, put on halt the entire supply chain in East India, which led to the shutdown of all McDonald’s restaurants there.
McDonald’s Facing Supply Disruptions in Some Parts of India
Vikram Bakshi believes that the culprit for the recent disruptions in the supply chain is McDonald’s. This is why the Indian partner closed a deal with another logistics partner, ColdEX, despite McDonald’s wish. The burger chain criticized the move and opposed the new partner.
One spokesperson for McDonald’s said unauthorized logistics vendors could result in compliance risks for the company which can impact food quality and safety, a hot topic in India for all fast-food franchises.
Bakshi replied that the giant restaurant chain has ignored safety and food quality standards for years. McDonald’s reportedly refused to pay any visits, investigate, or take action on food safety. Bakshi described McDonald’s concern for these topics as íronic’’after years of disregard to food safety topics in India.
On Thursday, McDonald’s confirmed that food is not safe to eat at some of its outlets in East and North India because of the supply disturbances. The company said that the ingredients shipped to those restaurants violated its global standards and the locations should be shut down.
