A Michigan woman had her gym membership membership after she had complained several times that a transgender person anatomically identified as male was using the ladies’ locker room.
Yvette Cormier told reporters that the incident happened last Saturday in Midland-based Planet Fitness locker room designed for women.
“I was blocked, because a man was standing there. It freaked me out because, why is a man in here?,”
Ms. Cormier said.
Soon after she went to the front desk staff and complained that a man was dressing in the women locker room. The employee there bluntly replied that the person identifies as a woman so it has the right to use the room.
But Ms. Cormier refused to accept the situation. She soon reached the corporate office of the gym where she was told that Planet Fitness was not a “judgement zone.” The staff also refused to bare the man in question to use the women’s locker room.
A spokesperson for the Planet Fitness recently stated that members were free to use any locker room as long as it was matching their self-asserted gender identity. Yet, Ms. Cormier is still at odds with this mindset, but she didn’t disclose whether she was planning on filing a lawsuit. She only said that it was a safety issue.
However, after the episode in the corporate office, she continued to attend the gym for four more days, but she warned women in the locker room that she saw a man that was using the bathroom.
Soon after, she received a brief call from the corporate office. The gym managers politely informed her that her deed violated their no judgement policy. When she was asked whether she would stop informing other women about what happened last weekend, she said she wouldn’t. As a result, the manager told her that her membership was canceled and she was not welcome at the fitness venue.
Also, the Planet Fitness spokesperson confirmed that the woman was banned from the gym, while her membership was canceled. But no other details were disclosed.
Planet Fitness’ public statement on the issue states that members and guests are allowed to use the gym’s facilities, including locker rooms, according to their “sincere self-reported gender identity .“ Also, Ms. Cormier behavior was described by the management as both “inappropriate” and “disruptive.”
However, the woman complained that the gym’s attitude was “kind of one sided.” She feels that the best solution would be that the club creates a third locker room for trans people.
