Microsoft is building an underwater data center in the Pacific Ocean and tech organizations are discovering some odd places for data facilities these days. For instance, Facebook, designed an information location in Europe due to the ice cool conditions there that would help reduce the power needed for cooling the equipment.
A suggested Facebook data location in Ireland will mainly depend on the local wind energy. On the other hand, Google’s data center located in Finland utilizes seawater from the regional bay for cooling. These days, it is Microsoft’s turn to look at discovering data facilities under the level of the sea.
They are now testing data centers located underwater while trying to decrease information latency for its many customers who are near the water and to allow fast implementation of these data centers.
Microsoft, a company that has has designed, produced and applied its own underwater data system over the course of last year, began working on its venture in at the end of 2014, at one year after one of its employees presented a document detailing this innovative idea.
A model boat, called Leona Philpot, worked on the seafloor at 3000 feet from the Hawaiian shore of the United States from Aug to Nov 2015, as Microsoft’s experts have announced on the company’s official site.
The underwater data center research, named Project Natick, is in a testing stage and the organization says that it needs time to assess whether the idea could be implemented by Microsoft and or the cloud providers.
The recent Project Natick shows Microsoft’s continuous search for cloud database alternatives that offer fast provisioning, low costs, top responsiveness while being more ecologically maintainable, the organization stated.
Using sub sea data facilities helps because these locations can work for the 50% of users who live near the ocean. The company declared in its FAQ that implementation in deep water provides ready accessibility to cooling, alternative energy resources and a managed environment.
In addition, these data centers can be made functional from beginning to end in around 3 months. Microsoft is analyzing the possibility of mixing its data center’s capabilities with turbines or tidal power systems to generate energy, according to its tech experts.
The organization is predicting that the life cycle of these data centers to be over 20 years and after this period, they will be renewed and reprocessed. Microsoft is also taking into consideration implementing deployment cycles of five years, which are in concordance with the life expectancy of the systems in it.
Once these implementation cycles are completed, the data centers would be recovered, reloaded with modern computer systems,and redeployed.
