On Thursday morning, Israel and Iran got engaged in their first direct fire since the start of their proxy war in Syria. The Israelis asked Syria not to get involved even though the missile strikes targeted several Iran bases on Syrian territory.
The Israeli military said it opened fire as retaliation for Iran’s recent missile attack on Israeli military targets in occupied Golan Heights. The Washington Post confirmed that “heavy military jet activity” was heard in the area all night long. Air-defense fire was exchanged as well.
Israel claims that troops tied to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards launched 20 missiles on Israeli military objectives. If Israel is right, it would be the first time Iran directly attacks Israel. The two states have been indirectly battling each other on Syrian territory for years.
Israeli troops reported no causalities. Iran’s missile attack caused minimal damage on the bases as the missiles were blocked by the Israelis’ missile defense system “Iron Dome.”
Israel and Iran Exchange Direct Fire
According to the New York Times, Iran attacked Golan Heights after Israel performed several fatal strikes on its targets in the area. Iran had reportedly delayed the attack waiting for a decision from Washington on whether the U.S. should pull out from the Iranian nuclear deal.
On Thursday morning, Israel Defense Forces’ Twitter account confirmed it planned to “move” against the Iranian bases on Syrian territory. IDF also urged the Syrian government not to step in.
Syria said that its air-defense systems were dropping Israeli rockets “one by one” in the region. The Syrian media confirmed that Israeli shells hit the Quneitra province next to the Golan Heights.
Israel had reportedly opened the bomb shelters in the Golan Heights as early as Tuesday because of “abnormal movements of Iranian forces in Syria.”
