For those of us who own a car without an in-built Wi-Fi connectivity or simply don’t know how to turn a smartphone into a Wi-Fi hotspot, AT&T has a solution.
The telecom giant announced that it partnered with ZTE USA to develop the technology that would bring 4G LTE Wi-Fi to nearly any vehicle.
AT&T pledged that its solution called ZTE Mobley would be both convenient and low-cost. The company disclosed that the technology would hit the market Sept. 11. ZTE Mobley will not require additional investments. It just needs a car with an on-board diagnosis (OBD) port to be plugged into. An OBD tool is present in most models manufactured after 1996.
AT&T experts explained that the new device which is powered by a Qualcomm MDM9215 CPU will morph into a self-standing Wi-Fi hotspot as soon as the car is turned on. The hotspot provides Internet access to up to five devices.
AT&T also disclosed that the Wi-Fi connectivity offered by the plug-and-play Wi-Fi hot-spot would be the fastest of its kind since it will be powered by the powerful 4G LTE infrastructure set in place by the mobile carrier in the U.S. AT&T’s 4G LTE network was ranked as the nation’s fastest 4G connection.
The telecom’s experts also disclosed that the device doesn’t need charging or charging cables since the hotspot is powered by the moving vehicle. As a result, the hotspot is on as long as the car is on.
AT&T’s customers can have the plug-and-play Wi-Fi hotspot in their car for an extra $10 per month to their shared data account. If you are not a customer of the telecom, you should request a DataConnect plan. But the monthly cost for 1GB worth of data will be $20 or $30 for 3GB, a recent report suggests.
Fortunately, users that opt for a 2-year contract will get the service absolutely for free. But if they decide not to make use of the 2-year contract they will still be able to buy the device for $99.99.
ZTE USA’s chief executive Lixin Cheng recently said that the partnership with AT&T was designed to deliver to U.S. customers a technology that is both practical and affordable.
“Collaborating with like-minded organizations in the U.S. has brought innovative Wi-Fi products to market that fuels our success and industry evolution,”
added Mr. Lixin Cheng in a recent press conference.
ZTE Mobley will be available for purchase at AT&T’s online and brick-and-mortar stores starting September 11.
