A 21-year-old man from New Jersey had to pay more than $1,600 for a multistate Uber ride after going to a frat party and the bar near West Virginia University’s campus on Friday night and being too drunk to know what he was doing.
The man reportedly instructed the Uber driver to take him home, to New Jersey, instead of the place where he was residing near the campus. The 300-mile trip, which the man doesn’t recall ordering, cost him $1,635.
We went to a frat party and then went to the bar. I was getting drinks all night; I probably spent like $200 at the bar after already drinking all day,
the 21-year-old man recalled.
He admitted that he “kinda blacked out” during the ride and the last thing he remembered was being at the bar. When he woke up, he found himself in the Uber car of an “older dude” who told him that they were one hour away from New Jersey.
Multistate Uber Ride Has ‘Insane’ Price Tag
When the trip ended and he saw the price tag he said that it was “insane”. The total cost included the base fare of $3.94, $696.95 for the long distance, $2.35 for booking, and $115 for the time.
The trip would have cost the man half the price, had he ordered an Uber X, not Uber XL which is more expensive and can transport up to six riders. Also, there was a surge pricing that night which pushed the initial price of $819.14 to a whopping $1,635.93.
Uber confirmed that the trip occurred and it has been paid for after the company discussed with the passenger. The rider reportedly paid all the tolls for the trip and gave the Uber driver a five-star rating on the Uber app. He is now reportedly heading back to West Virginia to get his bags.
