An agressive new HIV strain has invaded Cuba. The horrifying AIDS disease is developped very fast, so that treatments that are administered immediately after the virus has been identified, don’t work anymore. This has instantly become a global matter and the doctors are trying their best not to let panic make more damage than it already is installed.
Even if AIDS comes within three years after the infestation, the treatment comes very late, in comparison with the normal cases, in which hospitals could manage the infection in one way or another. Researcher Anne Mieke Vandamme, who is also a medical professor at the Belgium University of Leuvan, has stated that classically, the HIV virus need from 5 to 10 years in order to develop into AIDS and that everything that has been done dor this disease can work only if this period of time is existent. After being very alarmed by the study that has been published in the EbioMedicine, she tried to explain what it was all about.
“So this group of patients that progressed very well, they were all recently infected. And we know that because they have been negatively tested for HIV one or two years before.”
Not even one of those patience received treatment and the strain of HIV with which they have been infected has developed into AIDS in maximum three years. Scientists have tried comparing this kind of HIV virus with two other types, studying the cases of patients in three different groups that were especially created for this research. They found out that the most agressive one of the viruses is actually made out of a combination between three subtypes of virus, that has been named CRF19. It is a combination between the normal HIV virus and its A,D, and G subtypes.
The way a HIV virus “works” is common and rather easy: the virus attached itself to a co-receptor. The transformation from a simple virus and to a serious disease such as AIDS happens when the virus changes its co-receptors: from CCR5 to CXCR4. Here.s the catch – the new strain succeeds in making this transition much faster than in the usual cases.
However, Cuba is not the first countr where this kid of HIV viruses hve been detected. Afria hs als pesented some cases of the strain but the cases were not very numerous, so specalists didn’t mind not to actually make a complete study about the issue.
