Recent sleep studies have revealed that the blue backlight of smartphones and tablets could be the cause of sleep disorders. In this light, Apple has decided to implement a new feature meant to protect your eyes at night: the Night Shift setting.
It appears sleep patterns can be terribly affected by the blue blacklight used by all electronic devices. Since many of us enjoy scrolling through our Facebook feed in bed before going to sleep, this might affect us more than we know. Apple has taken the decision to create a new setting that can be activated at night and thus improves the quality of sleep for those of us who cannot give up on the habit.
Named Night Shift, the new feature is set to alter the temperature of the light color of Apple devices. Instead of the blue shade, the setting changes the light to its opposite, a warm orange-yellow. This might finally put an end to the negative effects of blue light: disrupting the melatonin production of the body, which is the sleep hormone that determines the human brain to finally get some rest.
The setting looks quite similar to a filter from Instagram, but be rest assured, you will still be able to read on your proffered device, as well as access all your favorite apps.
In spite of this good news, some experts still voiced their concerns that any type of backlight can disturb people’s sleep as it can prevent us from falling asleep and rest for the recommended time during the night. This, in turn, leads to health issues such as obesity, heart disease and stroke but also psychological conditions like depression.
Night Shift has yet to be tested by scientists. However, Dr. Mariana Figueiro from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute located in Troy, New York, believes that while the idea is beneficial, changing the color of the light is not enough to ensure a good night’s sleep. The intensity of the light needs to be adjusted as well. Dr. Figueiro also recommends people to change the screen polarity and read white text upon a black background.
Night Shift will be a healthier solution for sleeping problems, but if you wish to make sure you have a healthy sleep you should opt for paperback. As Google is never far behind, the major company has also announced a similar feature for the Android devices.
