When asked if she would want to join the presidential race in 2020, Oprah Winfrey replied that she is “actively thinking” about the option. Two close friends of the U.S. diva gave CNN details about her political plans Monday.
The two sources agreed to talk to CNN after Winfrey’s fiery speech at the 2018 Golden Globes awards Sunday night. The speech led to rumors about a potential presidential bid for 2020.
Sources also said that some of the businesswoman’s close aides have been trying to convince her to run for president for several months already. The former talk show host reportedly has not made up her mind about the issue.
Winfrey has not confirmed the rumors.
The Democratic Party will announce the contenders after the 2018 midterms. Over the last few months, many candidates have voiced their plans to join the Democratic race for the White House.
‘President Winfrey’ is On People’s Lips
In addition, many people started the “President Winfrey” chatter after she accepted an award at this year’s Golden Globes. Morning TV shows declared the “Oprah for POTUS” their main story shortly after the event.
During her speech, Winfrey reminded everyone about the #MeToo movement in a hopeful tone. Yet, many topics in her speech could have been used as a rallying cry for a political campaign. At least that was the impression for many liberal stars and viewers.
Political analysts agreed that Winfrey’s business acumen and charisma could make her a formidable rival of Donald Trump. On top of that, she is a woman. However, critics are not convinced that America will pick two TV stars as its leaders in a row.
That didn’t stop Winfrey’s fans from professing some wishful thinking on social media after the Golden Globes appearance. The diva’s longtime partner Stedman Graham said she would “absolutely do it” when asked about the presidential plans.
