The former Pro Bowl running back, Ray Rice was suspended indefinitely by the NFL and released by his team the Baltimore Ravens two months ago. It was announced that Ray Rice’s appeal will begin on Wednesday, November 5, in New York.
The Commissioner of NFL, Roger Goodell, the President of the Baltimore Ravens, Dick Cass and Jeffery Miller, the league security chief were announced as being the key witnesses in the hearing that will last for two days. It was rumored that Ray Rice’s wife might also testify at the trial.
The reason for Ray Rice’s indefinite suspension on September 8 was because he violated the NFL personal conduct policy. The NFL found a video of Ray Rice hitting his fiancée, after the video tape was released publicly. After the incident, Ray Rice was suspended by Goodell for only two games. The violent outburst of Ray Rice occurred in an elevator, at the Atlantic City casino. Rice married his then-fiancee a month later.
The league said that the video stands as new evidence which can give Goodell authority to amend Jay Rice’s suspension. Rice’s attorney argue that should not be punished twice, and they cited Article 46 of the collective bargaining agreement.
Judge Barbara S. Jones was chosen by the commissioner and the player’s union to hear Jay Rice’s appeal. No one knows for sure how long it will take Judge Jones to come to a decision.
In the midst of the appeal, Jay Rice is looking for an immediate reinstatement, although it’s highly unlikely that a team will sign him up this season. Jay Rice has filed a separate wrongful termination grievance act against his team the Baltimore Ravens.
Apparently, Goodell can still choose to avoid testifying at the trial if Rice and the team will reach a settlement.
ESPN sources said that Goodell has been ordered to testify in the trial and tell the court if he knew about the video showing the Jay Rice’s attack against his girlfriend. The hearing will continue on Thursday.
Ray Rice will have to work 80 hours in the community service and pay a $4000 fine, as part of the deal.
