Today another stereotype has been blown apart. You must have heard at least a couple of jokes directed at the lack of intelligence in blonde women, or at least witnessed a scene in a comedy movie. Science has finally stepped in and has proved that women with golden hair can be as smart as it gets.
A recent study conducted by the Ohio State University has shown that in the Armed Forces Qualification Test, blonde women recorded the highest scores. The test was performed on 10,878 American citizens and has reached the conclusion that hair color does not influence the level of intelligence in people.
For a very long time, blonde women have been considered beautiful but quite dumb, and many jokes and references in real life and the movies or TV shows have reinforced the belief. Unsurprisingly, like in many other stereotype cases, the information is false.
The IQ of the participants in the study was determined by asking them to complete the Armed Forces Qualification Test, which permitted the researchers to find out each person’s IQ. The test is famous for being used by the Pentagon for finding out the intelligence of recruits who applied for jobs. While the fact that blonde women are far from stupid is not shocking, they did surprise the researchers when they recorded the highest scores on the test.
It appears that fair-haired women have a 103.2 points average IQ, surpassing those with brown hair which scored 102.7, the redheads with 101.2 and the brunettes with 100.5 points. Furthermore, the results have shown that they were the least likely to end up at the bottom of the IQ scale, and they also qualified as geniuses.
As Jay Zagorsky, lead author of the study has pointed out, this stereotype has done much harm, as all such beliefs do. Setting aside the petty jokes and the public perception, many blonde women had a hard time finding a job because employers were influenced by the stereotype upon seeing the color of their hair.
On the other side, men scored different results depending on their hail color. It seems brown-haired men are the smartest with a 104.4 points IQ. They are followed by blondes with a score of 103.9, the men with red hair with 100.5 and black-haired men with 100.1 points.
While the study does not aim to prove that certain hair colors determine a higher level of intelligence, it does stand as proof that our brains are not influenced at all by our appearance.
